Congressional Budget Office: Projected federal budget deficit of $1.9 trillion in the 2026 fiscal year

On February 11th, local time, the Congressional Budget Office released the Executive Summary of the Budget and Economic Outlook for 2026 to 2036. The report indicates that, under the assumption that current tax and spending laws remain largely unchanged, the U.S. federal budget deficit for fiscal year 2026 is projected to be $1.9 trillion, accounting for 5.8% of Gross Domestic Product (GDP); by 2036, the deficit will expand to $3.1 trillion, representing 6.7% of GDP.

Regarding debt, the federal debt held by the public is expected to be 101% of GDP in 2026, rising to 120% by 2036, surpassing the 106% high set in 1946.

The economic outlook shows that the real GDP growth rate in 2026 will be 2.2%, then gradually slow to an average of 1.8% from 2027 to 2036.
