Deep Tide TechFlow News, February 11 — According to Cointelegraph, the U.S. Federal Court in New York dismissed a patent infringement lawsuit filed by entities associated with the Bancor protocol against decentralized exchange Uniswap. Judge John G. Koeltl ruled that the patents involved abstract concepts related to cryptocurrency exchange rate calculations, which do not qualify for patent protection under U.S. patent law.
The court found that these patents pertain to the abstract idea of “calculating currency exchange rates to execute transactions,” and that currency exchange is a “fundamental economic activity.” The judge rejected the plaintiff’s argument that implementing pricing formulas on blockchain infrastructure makes them patentable, noting that merely limiting abstract concepts to a specific technological environment does not meet patent eligibility criteria.
This dismissal is “without prejudice,” giving the plaintiff 21 days to submit an amended complaint. Uniswap founder Hayden Adams briefly stated on social media, “A lawyer just told us we won.”
