Yuyuantan Tianfa issued a statement stating that a French institution recently proposed to the European Union to impose tariffs equivalent to about 30% on China. This so-called “recommendation” targets only Chinese goods, clearly violating WTO rules and essentially declaring trade war against China. According to relevant sources, Tan Zhuo learned that if France insists on pushing the so-called “recommendation” into action, China can take at least three measures. First, China can consider launching anti-dumping and countervailing investigations against the EU, especially French wines. China is an important export market for EU wines, with EU wine exports to China nearing $700 million in 2024, nearly half of which are French wines. Second, if France does not repent, China can respond to recent unfriendly measures by France and the EU towards China, such as initiating anti-discrimination investigations. Additionally, if the EU unilaterally imposes tariffs on China, China will resolutely counterattack by applying “reciprocal tariffs” on relevant EU products. China always keeps the door open for communication but is also prepared to face all challenges.
