IGN February 4 News, Bloomberg reported on February 3 that Obsidian Entertainment, the developer of The Outer Worlds 2, announced that due to the game’s underwhelming sales, they will not be releasing The Outer Worlds 3.
Obsidian Entertainment CEO Feargus Urquhart stated in an interview that the performance of The Outer Worlds 2 was “disappointing,” and the company needs to “seriously consider how much money and time we have invested in the game.”
The company released three games in 2025: The Outer Worlds 2, Vow, and Survival Mode 2. Urquhart pointed out that this was a mistake.
“Extending the release cycle helps manage resources and prevents everyone from burning out,” Urquhart said. “Releasing three games within a year was a mistake, and the current situation is the consequence.”
According to publicly available information, The Outer Worlds 2 sold fewer than 1 million copies three months after launch, while the original The Outer Worlds sold about 2 million copies during its release period.
Game industry journalist Daniel Camilo tweeted, “The sequel selling less than the original is extremely bad news for the studio, publishers, and the future of this IP.”
The good news is that Urquhart confirmed that Obsidian Entertainment is still developing DLC for The Outer Worlds 2, and he also revealed that the company is working on new games. As of the time of this report, there is no further information about Obsidian’s new projects.
