Trailer loaded with waste causes traffic collapse in Nicolás Romero; Rescue operation costs skyrocket

A major traffic accident occurred early Tuesday, January 20, in the municipality of Nicolás Romero, State of Mexico. A trailer carrying approximately 40 tons of garbage from Mexico City overturned on 20 de Noviembre Avenue, causing solid waste to scatter across the pavement and partially closing this important thoroughfare. The driver suffered minor injuries and a nervous breakdown but did not require hospitalization. Although there were no serious victims, the incident caused significant disruption to mobility during the morning rush hours.

Immediate Impact: Traffic Collapse in the Area

The overturn happened just before 7:00 a.m. at the curve located in the Los Cantaros neighborhood, where the driver lost control of the vehicle heading toward the Tepojaco landfills, near the borders with Cuautitlán Izcalli. The heavy load of waste spilled onto one of the main lanes, blocking much of the roadway and preventing normal vehicle flow. Authorities from the State of Mexico have indicated that the operational cost of rescue and cleanup of this magnitude represents a significant investment in emergency resources and urban services, not to mention the costs caused by traffic delays for thousands of drivers.

Recommended Alternative Routes for Drivers

Due to the partial closure of 20 de Noviembre Avenue, authorities and mobility experts suggest the following detours for those traveling northward in the State of Mexico or toward neighboring metropolitan areas:

  • Via Atizapán de Zaragoza: take secondary avenues such as Luis Donaldo Colosio or Miguel Alemán, depending on the starting point
  • Internal roads of Nicolás Romero: use secondary streets to bypass the accident zone
  • Circuito Exterior Mexiquense: for destinations toward Naucalpan or northern areas, this toll option may be faster, though it involves paying a toll

Extraction and Cleanup Operation: A Complex Task

Urban service personnel and emergency teams began recovery work early to remove scattered waste and tow the overturned trailer with the help of heavy-duty cranes. The work has been complicated by the extraordinary weight of the load and the terrain features, prolonging road closures for several hours. The cost of these rescue and cleanup operations, which include mobilizing heavy equipment, specialized personnel, and restoring traffic flow, represents a significant expense for municipal authorities.

Authorities from the State of Mexico have urged the public to avoid the area and stay informed through official traffic channels. They also called on transport operators to exercise extreme caution when passing through sections with sharp curves, aiming to prevent future incidents of similar magnitude that could compromise infrastructure and lead to greater economic consequences.
