How Many XRP Wallets Exist Today

The sheer number of XRP wallets—over 7.6 million active addresses—provides important context for understanding the ecosystem’s size and adoption. However, this raw figure alone masks critical differences in how tokens are distributed across these wallets. The average balance of around 8,000 XRP per wallet might seem substantial, yet this statistic obscures the dramatic inequality beneath the surface. The reality is that average figures in highly skewed datasets like cryptocurrency distributions can be deeply misleading without examining the underlying structure.

Whale Concentration: Why a Few Accounts Dominate

The upper end of wallet distribution reveals the real story behind elevated average holdings. Just a handful of mega-wallets hold an outsized share of XRP. Five wallets alone contain at least 1 billion XRP each, collectively commanding over 7.4 billion tokens. Moving down the scale, approximately 22 wallets in the 500 million to 1 billion XRP range control more than 12 billion XRP in total, while roughly 58 wallets holding between 100 million and 500 million XRP account for over 12.25 billion XRP combined.

These whales fundamentally distort the average. Despite representing a tiny fraction of all XRP wallets, their massive holdings pull the mean upward dramatically, creating a false impression of typical holder positions. Around 131 wallets holding 20 million to 100 million XRP collectively control over 5.19 billion tokens, while approximately 168 wallets in the 5 million to 10 million XRP range hold roughly 1.14 billion XRP. While sizable by retail standards, these mid-range wallets still pale in comparison to the mega-holders at the top.

The Majority: Small Holders and Real Distribution

In sharp contrast, the vast majority of XRP wallets hold tiny balances. Over 2.38 million addresses contain between 20 and 500 XRP—representing a combined 176.7 million XRP. More than 1.3 million wallets hold between 0 and 20 XRP, totaling just 16.6 million XRP across all of them. When combined, over 3.7 million XRP wallets sit below 500 tokens, far from the inflated average figure.

This extreme concentration at the top paired with massive dispersion at the bottom demonstrates why relying solely on averages creates a distorted view of the typical XRP holder. Most active wallets contain holdings measured in the hundreds, not thousands, of tokens.

Beyond Averages: What Median Values Reveal

To understand what most wallet holders actually possess, median values offer far greater clarity than arithmetic means. While precise median calculation requires individual wallet-level data, the midpoint of all addresses falls within the 20–500 XRP range, placing the realistic central position around 300 XRP—a stark contrast to the approximately 8,000 XRP average.

This fundamental statistical principle applies broadly: in highly unequal distributions, aggregate measures like averages have an outsized impact from a small number of outliers.
