Russia is solidifying its plan to gradually introduce the digital ruble, a central bank digital currency, into the Moscow subway network. This project is part of a large-scale transportation infrastructure modernization effort aimed for completion by 2028, significantly expanding payment options for users.

Scale of the Subway Expansion Project

The Moscow subway expansion plan includes the construction of 13 new stations and the extension of 27 kilometers of track. This investment is not just about expanding transportation infrastructure but is positioned as a comprehensive measure to accelerate the transition to a digital economy. All new stations and interstation facilities are expected to be equipped with digital ruble-compatible payment systems, with cash usage being phased out gradually.

Phased Implementation of Digital Ruble Payments

The timeline for adopting the digital ruble is based on the Duma law passed in 2023. The law mandates the introduction of digital payments starting in the second half of 2026, and the Moscow subway system is deploying an implementation schedule aligned with this national policy.
